Blood type and personality: what the evidence says
There is no good evidence for it. When researchers compared people's ABO blood groups against their scores on a personality inventory, in an Australian adult sample, they found no significant relationship between blood type and personality (Rogers & Glendon, 2003). The differences people notice in one another have better explanations, including heritable variation and ordinary adult development.

What is the blood type personality belief?
The idea is that your ABO blood group, A, B, O or AB, corresponds to a character type. Type A is described as careful and considerate, type B as free-spirited, type O as sociable and confident, type AB as rational and hard to read. The blood groups themselves are real biology: they describe which antigens sit on the surface of your red blood cells, they matter a great deal for transfusion, and they are inherited in a well understood way. The personality claim is an addition to that biology, not a part of it.
The belief is strongest in Japan, where it is known as ketsueki-gata, and in South Korea. It circulates in the ordinary way beliefs about character do: in magazines and television segments, in compatibility columns, on packaged goods, in casual conversation and sometimes in dating. Asking a new acquaintance their blood type there carries roughly the weight that asking a star sign carries elsewhere. It is a social convention, widely known and often held lightly.
Outside those countries the same idea reaches people mainly through online quizzes headed blood type personality test. Those usually work backwards: you enter your group and the page returns a description written in advance, which is a different exercise from measuring anything about you.
What did the controlled study find?
The claim has been tested directly. Rogers and Glendon compared blood group against personality scores from a self-report inventory in an Australian adult sample, and looked for the associations the belief predicts. They reported no significant relationship between ABO blood group and personality (Rogers & Glendon, 2003).
Two features of that design are worth naming, because they are what make a null result informative. The first is that personality was measured with an established instrument rather than with the descriptions the belief itself supplies, so the scores could have come out any way. The second is that the study went looking for the specific associations the belief predicts rather than for any association at all. When the prediction was given a fair chance to appear, it did not.
A single study is not the end of any question. But it is the kind of study the belief calls for, and nothing in the published record since has established the association it looked for. That is where the evidence stands: a specific, testable claim, tested, with no relationship found.
What are the four blood types said to mean?
Here is the popular scheme as it usually appears, alongside what the tested evidence says about each claim. The middle column is a description in circulation. It is not a finding about people with that blood group.

Read as a set, the four descriptions cover most of ordinary character between them: careful and free, sociable and private, warm and analytical. Any adult will recognise themselves somewhere in the list, which is part of why the scheme survives without support from measurement.
Why does the belief persist?
Mostly for reasons that have nothing to do with blood. The clearest is the one Forer demonstrated in a classroom. He gave his students a personality test, then handed every student the same short sketch, drawn from a newsstand astrology book, and told each of them it was their own result. Asked how well it described them, they rated it about 4.26 out of 5, as the demonstration is usually reported (Forer, 1949). A description that fits almost anyone reads as personal once it is labelled with your name.
Expectation does the rest, and it works in two directions. If you have been told since school that your type is careful, you are more likely to notice the careful things you do and to let the careless ones pass. Other people, knowing your type, may read your behaviour the same way, describe you in those terms and remember the moments that fit. Over years, a description repeated by everyone around you becomes hard to separate from an observation.
- Statements that fit anyone. Four categories divided among billions of people cannot be narrow.
- Ownership. A description presented as yours is read as being about you, so you supply the examples.
- Selective memory. The times the description fitted are remembered; the times it missed are not.
- Social confirmation. Where the belief is common, other people describe you in its terms, which feels like corroboration.
- Flattering framing. Each type is described kindly, including its weaknesses, so there is nothing to push back against.
None of this makes anyone credulous. The same pattern appears wherever a system is experienced rather than tested, and it is why controlled comparisons matter. When astrology was put to a double-blind test, astrologers could not match natal charts to the corresponding personality profiles above chance (Carlson, 1985). Systems can feel dependable to everyone involved and still not survive that kind of check.
What does predict personality traits?
Two things carry most of the weight. The first is inheritance, though not in the single-gene way the blood type idea suggests. A meta-analysis of twin, family and adoption studies put the heritability of personality at about forty percent, meaning roughly two fifths of the differences between people in those samples tracked genetic differences (Vukasović & Bratko, 2015). That influence is spread across many variants of very small effect, which is why no trait maps onto one inherited marker the way blood group does.
The second is development. Personality is not settled at birth. Pooling longitudinal studies across the life course shows average levels moving in a consistent direction through adulthood: people become more conscientious and more emotionally stable, mostly between 20 and 40, more agreeable mainly in later life, while social vitality rises in adolescence and declines in old age (Roberts et al., 2006). Structured programmes can move trait measures as well, by about a third of a standard deviation over roughly six months (Roberts et al., 2017).
The remainder is mostly the part of the environment that siblings do not share: particular friendships, particular work, particular luck. How does Wellington measure personality instead?

The test worth applying to anything that describes you is simple. Could the description have come out differently, given different answers? - What does predict someone's personality?
