What is self-efficacy as a personality trait?

How much you believe, in general, that you can handle tasks and reach your goals when you try. As a personality trait it is one of the narrower traits, or facets, beneath Conscientiousness: not how capable you are, but how capable you expect to be when the next task arrives.

What does self-efficacy mean?

How much you believe, in general, that you can handle tasks and reach your goals when you try. Put another way, it is a steady, generalised trust that when a task appears, you will find a way to do it.

The word points at an expectation rather than a skill. Two people with identical training can sit in front of the same spreadsheet and differ entirely in what happens next: one opens it, the other finds three other things to do first. The difference is not competence but the prediction each is making about the next hour, and because expectations shape whether you start and how long you persist, the prediction ends up affecting the result.

Self-efficacy is not self-esteem. Self-esteem is how favourably you regard yourself as a person; self-efficacy is a working estimate of what you can get done, and the self-esteem test page covers that other construct. Nor is it optimism about the world. Optimism says things will turn out well; self-efficacy says you will be the one who makes them turn out.

How does trait self-efficacy differ from Bandura's self-efficacy?

The concept comes from Bandura (1977), who defined self-efficacy as a person's belief that they can organise and carry out the actions a particular situation demands, and named four sources for the belief: mastery experience, watching similar people succeed, persuasion from others, and physiological states. In that account self-efficacy is deliberately specific. There is your efficacy for public speaking, your efficacy for statistics, your efficacy for a difficult conversation with a neighbour, and these differ sharply in the same person. Bandura's measures are written for a named task at a named level of difficulty.

A trait-level facet asks a broader question: across tasks in general, how much do you expect to cope. That is the generalised version, measured by scales such as the General Self-Efficacy Scale and the public-domain IPIP self-efficacy facet, and it is the version a personality inventory can report as one number alongside other traits.

The difference matters in both directions. The trait version is broader, so for any one task it predicts less well than a well-written task-specific measure: if you want to know whether someone will finish a statistics course, ask about statistics. The honest reading of a high trait score is that you approach unfamiliar tasks as solvable, not that you can do any particular thing.

Which personality dimension is self-efficacy part of?

The trait sits under Conscientiousness, the Big Five dimension describing how organised, dependable and self-disciplined a person tends to be, and it is the belief part of that dimension rather than the behaviour part. Broad dimensions are hierarchies: under each sit narrower traits, called facets.

The NEO inventories call the equivalent facet Competence and place it under Conscientiousness (Costa & McCrae, 1992). The BFI-2 uses three facets per dimension and covers this ground through its productiveness scale (Soto & John, 2017). Between domain and facet sit ten aspects, with Conscientiousness dividing into industriousness and orderliness (DeYoung et al., 2007). HEXACO has its own Conscientiousness facets, including diligence (Lee & Ashton, 2004), and the public-domain IPIP pools carry free versions of these scales (Goldberg et al., 2006; Johnson, 2014).

The named scales behind it are: General Self-Efficacy Scale; New General Self-Efficacy Scale; IPIP Self-Efficacy facet. Their items ask what you expect of yourself in general terms: completing tasks successfully, knowing how to get things done, handling complex problems.

How is self-efficacy different from self-confidence and achievement striving?

The three are easy to blur and easy to separate once you look at what each is about. Self-efficacy is about tasks: can this be done by me. Self-Confidence, as the facet is scored, sits under Emotional Stability and is about your standing among people. Achievement Striving is about ambition: how high you set the bar, regardless of how sure you are of clearing it.

An example separates them. A quiet engineer can dread the team meeting and still be certain the system will work by Friday: low social confidence, high self-efficacy. And a person can aim at something demanding precisely because they are not sure they can do it, which is achievement striving running ahead of self-efficacy.

What do high and low self-efficacy look like?

High scorers treat an unfamiliar task as a problem with a solution somewhere in it, and that expectation does most of its work at the beginning, because starting is where tasks are usually lost.

  • You take on things you have not done before, on the assumption that you will work it out.
  • A setback reads as information about the method rather than about you.
  • You are the person who says the problem is solvable before anyone knows how.

The costs are specific. Confidence that outruns evidence produces underestimated timelines and jobs taken on that needed a specialist, help gets asked for late, and a person who expects to cope can be slow to notice that the approach has stopped working.

Low scorers count the cost before promising themselves anything, which buys estimates that hold and preparation that is actually done. The cost is that tasks well within reach get postponed, and the postponement removes the mastery experience that would have moved the estimate. Neither end is the good one, and most people sit in the middle, believing in themselves in proportion to the evidence.

What does the research say about self-efficacy?

Bandura (1977) set out the account still in use: efficacy beliefs are drawn from mastery experience, watching similar people succeed, persuasion from others and physiological states, and they shape whether a person starts a task, how much effort they put in, and how long they keep going when it gets hard. The useful implication is that the belief is built from what you have actually done, not only from how you talk to yourself about it.

At the level of the parent dimension the evidence is strong. In the meta-analysis of the Big Five and job performance, Conscientiousness was the only dimension that predicted performance across every occupational group studied (Barrick & Mount, 1991). It also predicts academic performance, largely independently of intelligence (Poropat, 2009). A meta-analysis of the behaviours contributing most to mortality found it related to fewer risky habits and more protective ones (Bogg & Roberts, 2004), and across large longitudinal studies traits predict outcomes such as divorce and occupational attainment about as well as socioeconomic status and cognitive ability do (Roberts et al., 2007).

The facet-specific literature on generalised self-efficacy is smaller than the literature on the dimension, so this page does not attach a number to what the trait alone predicts. On change, mean levels of Conscientiousness rise across adulthood, with the steepest gains between about 20 and 40 (Roberts et al., 2006). In a meta-analysis of 207 intervention studies, trait measures moved about a third of a standard deviation over roughly six months, largest for Emotional Stability, and drawn mostly from therapy and counselling trials (Roberts et al., 2017), and in two sixteen-week studies wanting to change was followed by measured change, with specific if-then plans helping more than general intentions (Hudson & Fraley, 2015).

How does Wellington measure self-efficacy?

Wellington is a science-based personality assessment from Therabot Labs LLC. It measures personality as continuous traits, built on the Big Five and HEXACO models, and writes the results back as a personal report rather than a type.

Trait Self-Efficacy is scored from 7 statements rated on a five-point accuracy scale, and it is one of the 90 traits reached in the Wellington Membership, which adds the Portrait in 4 chapters. The average is placed against a reference sample as a percentile and reported in one of three bands: Quiet below the 30th percentile, Balanced up to the 70th, High above it. Those norms are provisional until the norming sample is complete. The bands and the Portrait names exist to make the result easier to talk about; the percentile is the measurement, and it is always shown alongside. It is not built for hiring or selection, and you can export or delete your data at any time.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between self-efficacy and self-esteem?
Self-efficacy is an estimate of what you can do; self-esteem is how favourably you regard yourself as a person. They often travel together and they are not the same. Someone can hold themselves in modest regard and still be sure they will finish the job, and someone else can like themselves a great deal and expect to make a mess of the task in front of them. Wellington scores them separately.
Can self-efficacy change?
Yes, and it is among the more movable dispositions, because it is built from evidence. Bandura (1977) named mastery experience as one of the four sources of the belief, so completing slightly hard things is one route by which the estimate moves. More broadly, Conscientiousness rises across adulthood (Roberts et al., 2006), and in two sixteen-week studies wanting to change a trait was followed by measured change, with specific if-then plans helping more than general intentions (Hudson & Fraley, 2015).
Is high self-efficacy always good?
No. Belief that runs ahead of evidence produces optimistic timelines, jobs accepted that needed someone else, and help asked for too late. The useful version is calibrated: high enough to start, honest enough to notice when the approach is not working. The middle band describes exactly that, belief held in proportion to the evidence for it.
Why is it called Trait Self-Efficacy?
To keep it distinct from the task-specific construct. Bandura's (1977) self-efficacy is defined for a particular situation and measured by asking about that situation. The trait version asks how you expect to cope across tasks in general, which is what a personality inventory can report as a single score. The word Trait marks which of the two you are reading.
