Personality and academic performance

Conscientiousness is the trait that predicts academic performance, and it does so largely independently of intelligence. Once earlier school results are accounted for, it adds as much to the prediction of later results as intelligence does (Poropat, 2009). Agreeableness and Openness also correlate with performance, and academic level and age change the size of all of these relationships.

Which personality traits predict academic performance?

The standard answer comes from a meta-analysis of five-factor model traits and academic performance built on cumulative samples of more than 70,000 people (Poropat, 2009). Most of the data came from tertiary education, with comparable aggregate samples at secondary level and a smaller body of primary-level research. Three dimensions correlated significantly with performance: Conscientiousness, Agreeableness and Openness.

Conscientiousness is the headline, and the reason is not the size of its correlation but what happened when intelligence was taken into account. Where it was tested, the relationship between Conscientiousness and performance was largely independent of intelligence. Once secondary academic performance was controlled, Conscientiousness added as much to the prediction of tertiary performance as intelligence did (Poropat, 2009). That is a strong claim about a trait that anyone can describe in themselves in a few minutes.

The dimensions involved are the Big Five, which came out of decades of lexical research rather than from a single study (Goldberg, 1993), and none of them was designed to predict grades. Trait measures also predict major life outcomes at a level comparable to socioeconomic status and measured ability (Roberts et al., 2007), so a modest but real relationship with school results is what to expect.

The meta-analysis reports no individual correlation values in its abstract, so this page quotes none. The direction and the comparison with intelligence are the findings.

Is this just intelligence in disguise?

No, and that is the most interesting part of the result. Where both were measured, the Conscientiousness advantage did not disappear once intelligence was accounted for (Poropat, 2009). Two students of similar ability do not produce similar work, and the difference is partly in how the term was spent.

A useful distinction sits behind this. Assessment separates intelligence-as-maximal-performance, what a person can do when fully engaged in a timed test, from intelligence-as-typical-performance, what they do habitually (Ackerman & Heggestad, 1997). An ability test samples the first. A semester samples the second, over and over, through attendance, reading, drafts and revision, and Conscientiousness is a summary of that second kind of behaviour.

The same review found that intelligence, personality and vocational interests overlap rather than standing apart as separate domains, and that they cluster into four trait complexes: social, clerical and conventional, science and mathematics, and intellectual and cultural (Ackerman & Heggestad, 1997). Ability, interest and disposition travel together, which is part of why isolating one of them as the cause of a grade is difficult.

Does it hold at every age and level?

Not uniformly. Academic level, average age, and the interaction between them significantly moderated the correlations (Poropat, 2009). The link between a trait and performance is not one fixed quantity that applies from primary school to a doctorate.

That matters for how findings get quoted. Most of the underlying data is from university students, so a result reported as a general truth about students is mostly a result about people old enough to organise their own weeks. In earlier education more of the structure comes from outside the student, from timetables, teachers and parents, and a trait has less room to make a difference. The primary-level evidence is also thinner than the rest.

The practical version: a reliable pattern in adult and near-adult education, with less to say the younger the student is.

What can a student do with this?

Not envy a trait. The finding is about conscientious behaviour accumulating over a term, and behaviour responds to arrangements far faster than temperament does.

  • Build the structure outside your head. A visible deadline, a shorter list, a fixed hour, a study partner who expects you: each of these produces conscientious behaviour without requiring the trait. What predicted results was the work done, not the score on a questionnaire.
  • Spend effort where it compounds. The advantage here is a typical-performance advantage (Ackerman & Heggestad, 1997), built from ordinary weeks rather than intense final ones. Twenty minutes most days beats a heroic Sunday.
  • Use your interests rather than fighting them. Interests, abilities and traits cluster together (Ackerman & Heggestad, 1997), and a course chosen against every one of your dispositions asks for willpower every week.
  • Expect slow movement on the trait itself. Traits do shift with deliberate effort, modestly and over months rather than weeks. Can personality change? covers what the intervention research supports and what it does not.

A student who scores low on Conscientiousness and hands in the work on time has already produced what the research measured. The trait was only ever a way of predicting who usually does that.

Should personality tests be used in admissions?

They should not, and the reasons are practical. A self-report questionnaire filled in by someone who wants a place is not the same measurement as one filled in privately for reflection, and nothing in the instrument can tell the two apart. Answers move with the stakes, and the traits most worth overstating are exactly the ones that predict performance.

Group-level findings are also too loose to rank two applicants. A meta-analytic correlation describes a trend across tens of thousands of students and leaves wide variation inside every band. Selection carries fairness and legal requirements that a consumer wellness product does not meet, and sorting applicants by trait score would narrow an intake toward one way of studying, which is rarely what a course needs.

Questions people ask

Which personality trait is linked to good grades?
Conscientiousness. In a meta-analysis drawing on cumulative samples of more than 70,000, it correlated with academic performance largely independently of intelligence, and once earlier school results were controlled it added as much as intelligence to predicting later results (Poropat, 2009). Agreeableness and Openness also correlated with performance, more modestly, and the effects varied by academic level and age.
Does personality matter more than intelligence for school results?
No, and the research does not claim that. The finding is that Conscientiousness predicts performance largely independently of intelligence, and that after controlling for prior results it adds a comparable amount (Poropat, 2009). Comparable is not greater. Ability, personality and interests also overlap rather than acting as separate forces (Ackerman & Heggestad, 1997), which makes clean comparisons hard.
Can a low Conscientiousness score hold a student back?
It describes a tendency, not a ceiling, and the correlations leave wide variation inside every band. What the research measured was work done over a term, and that responds to arrangements: visible deadlines, shorter lists, fixed hours, someone expecting a draft. Many students with low scores produce excellent results by building structure outside their own motivation rather than relying on it.
Can schools or universities use personality tests to select students?
