Trait vs state: the difference, with examples
A trait is a stable, general pattern, such as being sociable or organised, measured as the average of many separate moments. A state is what you are thinking, feeling or doing right now, in one specific situation, and it can sit well above or below that average without changing it. Traits shift slowly, over years; states shift by the hour.

What is the difference between a trait and a state?
A trait and a state answer two different questions. A trait answers this one: what are you like, in general, across many situations and years? A state answers a narrower one: what are you doing, feeling or thinking right now, in this one situation? A trait item asks about a pattern, 'I see myself as someone who is talkative', rated against how you generally are; a state item asks about an episode, 'right now, I feel talkative'. The difference between trait and state is a difference in timescale, not in which one is real.
Researchers built separate instruments for the state side. The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule is a twenty-item scale for how someone feels right now, as two largely independent dimensions, positive and negative affect, distinct from any trait score (Watson et al., 1988). The same split applies to worry. Trait worry vs state worry is a useful pair: trait worry is a general tendency to feel uneasy across many days, while state worry is the unease attached to one thing, a delayed flight, that settles once it resolves.
How does a trait relate to the many states that make it up?
One way to picture a trait is as a distribution, a spread of many states rather than one number. Imagine plotting every state you have been in on a line from quiet to talkative, then looking at a fortnight of your own readings on it: some points cluster near the middle, a few sit further out, and the cloud has a centre. That centre is close to what a trait score reports, the average of many moments.
Fleeson and colleagues (2002) tested this directly, having people report how extraverted they were behaving, and how they felt, every few hours across two weeks. How extraverted people were behaving varied from one report to the next, so even someone who scores as strongly introverted has more and less talkative hours within their own fortnight. Within the same person, the more extraverted moments also carried more positive affect, and this held across the sample: people, on average, felt happier in their own more extraverted moments (Fleeson et al., 2002).
Can you act out of character, and what does it cost?
Zelenski and colleagues (2012) randomly assigned people to act more extraverted or more introverted during a short task, then measured mood and a concentration task. People asked to act more extraverted reported more positive affect with no rise in negative affect, and this held for introverts and extraverts alike, matching Fleeson and colleagues' naturally occurring pattern (Zelenski et al., 2012).
The cost turned up elsewhere: concentration-task performance dropped, but only for extraverts asked to act introverted, not the reverse. These are single laboratory sessions, not evidence about acting out of character for months on end.
How stable are traits over the long run, compared with a state?
A state can turn over within an hour. A trait describes something steadier, though not with perfect stability. Roberts and DelVecchio (2000) reviewed 152 longitudinal studies of how consistently people kept their ranking on a trait relative to others tested at the same time. Rank-order consistency rose with age, from about .31 in childhood to .54 through the college years, .64 around age 30, then a plateau near .74 between ages 50 and 70 (Roberts & DelVecchio, 2000). A correlation of .74 is high, and it means people mostly keep their standing across years, not that the standing never moves.

What does this mean for reading a personality test result?
A well-built trait item pulls for the average, not the moment. Items ask about most days rather than today, so one unusually good or bad day contributes only one answer among many pointing at the same pattern. A result can still look slightly off during an unusual stretch, a demanding new job, a run of poor sleep, because that week's answers may lean toward the states the stretch is producing. If a result surprises you, ask whether the last few weeks were representative.

How does Wellington measure this?

Norms are provisional while the norming sample is completed. Because a trait is an average, one sitting is one estimate. Questions people ask
- Is mood the same thing as a state?
- Yes, broadly. A mood is a state, temporary rather than lasting, and it can be measured with a state instrument such as the PANAS, which asks how you feel right now rather than in general (Watson et al., 1988). Moods tend to be broader and less tied to one trigger, but both sit on the state side of the divide.
- Does acting out of character help your mood?
- Often, and briefly. People asked to act more extraverted reported more positive affect with no rise in negative affect, including people who were naturally introverted (Fleeson, Malanos & Achille, 2002; Zelenski, Santoro & Whelan, 2012). A concentration cost turned up only for extraverts asked to act introverted, in single laboratory sessions.
- How stable is a trait compared with a state?
- Far more stable, though never perfectly fixed. A review of 152 longitudinal studies found that people's rank order on broad traits rose from about .31 in childhood to about .74 between ages 50 and 70 (Roberts & DelVecchio, 2000). A state, by contrast, can turn over within a single hour.
